Acknowledgement

A love supreme was recorded in four parts on Dec 9, 1964 in Englewood Cliffs, NJ and released on Impulse! Records in January 1965. The first part begins with “Acknowledgment”, which includes the oral chant that gives the album its name. It is the first movement in a piece of work.

Dina and Roman first met in person at a tribute concert to John Coltrane. The concert began at dusk in Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem. We sat on a bench with a crowd of Coltrane fans but it was as if no one else was there. Our focus was on each other and the music. It was magical. The sun settled on the horizon and the stars appeared in the sky. We held hands and moved to the beat. We had visions of Coltrane himself playing the tenor sax. The music filled our souls.

We want to acknowledge and express our gratitude for each other, with these memories in mind. We also acknowledge all of you who care for us, and support us and love us.

Just as Coltrane expressed a spiritual declaration and a devotion to music, Dina and Roman request your presence as we declare and proclaim our love and devotion to each other. This day would not be possible without all of you. Please join us and enjoy the music of John Coltrane as we did under the stars.
